This was sunrise on day two of my overnight stay at the Sligachan Hotel, a luxury stopover I treated myself during my Scotland adventure. After a week in the van with no shower, I caved in to the luxury of four walls, a real bed and most of all – after a week without a shower – warm running water.
As I mentioned in the first shot I took of the river, the day before, it lies right next to the hotel, so this was probably my quickest ever trek to a location. Additionally, this composition pretty much made itself, so all in all, a pretty easy morning’s work.
This is a beautiful part of the world, and I spent a happy hour in the same spot, releasing the shutter every few minutes as the scenery changed with the rising sun. The sun never quite covered the foreground and the background at the same time, but I think that, for this photograph, it works pretty well, with the darkened mountains highlighting the beautiful golden morning light in the foreground.
A really satisfying morning watching the sun rise over the Skye landscape followed immediately by a monster cooked breakfast and some proper, authentic haggis.
I could actually have happily stayed for another few nights, but it was back to the van and life on the road. For the first time in a few days, I had no idea where I was heading, but a chance encounter lead to one of the most incredible locations I’ve sever photographed.
This is photo 7 of 10 from my 2017 Scotland trip.
